Mercedes-Benz Australia has rolled out a plug-in hybrid powertrain to the GLE large SUV with an AMG-beating price and almost as much performance.
Available in both SUV and Coupe body styles, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE45e is priced at $156,900 before on-road costs and $160,900 respectively – $31,000 and $27,000 less than the equivalent AMG-tuned GLE53.
However, with 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline six-cylinder engine and electric motor combination, the GLE450e produced a combined 320kW/680Nm.
This makes the hybrid SUV just 10kW off the mark of the GLE53, but with 80Nm more torque.

With drive sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, the GLE450e is claimed to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.6 seconds – 0.7s slower than the GLE53.
However, with a 25.7kWh battery and a full charge, the GLE450e is rated to travel up to 87 and 91km (SUV and Coupe, respectively) without using a single drop of petrol.
From the outside, the GLE450e wears much of the same sheet metal as updated fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz large SUV, though the SUV version features 20-inch AMG wheels while the Coupe ups sizing by one inch.
The AMG Line exterior styling and Night Package are also standard on the plug-in hybrid Benz for a more aggressive look.

Inside, buyers are treated to a synthetic leather interior, heated front seats, push-button start, a head-up display, Burmester sound system, and Mercedes’ 12.3-inch MBUX infotainment display.
Differentiating the Coupe from the SUV is also the inclusion the AMG Line Sports Seats Package with Suede-like microfibre inserts.
In terms of options, Mercedes lists the $5600 Interior Comfort Package, $2300 Exterior Comfort Package, $3800 Airmatic package, $3000 Towbar Package, $1300 aluminium-look running boards, $1100 60kW DC charger, and $2800 Digital Light.
